I don't believe that those against Jesus (the Pharisees and others) would need to steal the body as they would not want Jesus's followers to use that in any way to support their cause.
Do you mean that the Jesus followers could then accuse the Pharisees of sneaking, cheating, and lying,

and the public's imagination might run wild, at least for some people,

to the benefit of growing and enlarging the Jesus movement?

Not accuse them of lying but I do believe the public's imagination would lead many to claim that Jesus was alive somewhere. I believe it would've been in the leadership's interest to kill any idea of Jesus coming back to life because they wouldn't want it to threaten their power and religious influence. Their actions to squash the Jesus movement in the Book of Acts is evidence of that.
