31 Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.

32 As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.

33 Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

Several hours later or maybe the next day, did Jesus hug Peter and said he was sorry, and thank him for trying to protect him? And then go on to explain that his mission might involve him (Jesus) laying down his life; in fact, it almost certainly will.

I mean, the disciple Peter is not Satan. Just saying!

We’re more familiar with the story in which Jesus is in the wilderness, and (?) Satan takes him up high and shows him all these kingdoms which can be his.

And Jesus says, Get behind me, Satan! [ the high energy approach to temptation, which is not always most productive ]

Luke, chapter 4 —

5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, . . .

I'm not sure what Jesus is doing traveling with Satan, or even talking with him. Maybe it's a metaphor of temptation?

The word “Satan” simply means “adversary”:
Strong’s Definitions
שָׂטָן sâṭân, saw-tawn'; from H7853; an opponent; especially (with the article prefixed) Satan, the arch-enemy of good:—adversary, Satan, withstand.

Jesus’ purpose for coming to this world was to die on the cross in order to redeem mankind. Peter’s rebuke of Jesus made him an adversary ofJesus’ plan.
