I believe many Christians view the Jews and their state as being part of prophecy, and that leads to them always taking the side of Israel over the Arabs. I remember when I was a Christian, I also had this same feeling and thinking, and it made me think that Israel could do no wrong.
But now, I see this as a Western bias.
Here's how I think Israel should be viewed...
First, Israel should be viewed as any other nation should be viewed - capable of both good and bad. This means that it is very possible for the Jews today to be unfair in land occupation and to mistreat their Palestinian neighbors - and yes, even commit genocide if they really wanted all the land to themselves (which some Jews do). Even Jesus called the Jewish state of his time wicked and they conspired against him to have him killed.
However, given this recent shift in my position, I'm reminded to not automatically jump to the opposite mainstream side that calls for not supporting Israel. The simple reason is that the other mainstream side has its own problems and extremes. One popular side are those that chant and organize under the Free Palestine cause. I get it that we want Palestine to be free, but too often I've also seen bias from this group, like when they fail to realize that Palestine is already not free even without Israel being involved. Some give me the impression that they don't even want Israel to exist, and that should not be a surprised since many Palestinians don't want Israel to exist - they also want all of the land for themselves.
So just as I became an agnostic and Independent, I feel as though I have to take some middle ground position to avoid the extremes, hatred, and polarization that both sides sometimes stir up.
Here's my position:
- Two state solution, both sides having an equal amount of land.
- Hamas can not rule and must be disarmed
- Any Israeli leaders that have pushed for total land grab or were wreckless and careless and denying aid should also be removed from power and even investigated for war crimes.
