election candidates are starting to acknowledge that the political rhetoric can cause violence

“Even though I think the other side does it worse, I will do my part.”

And maybe that’s the beginning of wisdom!

I will do my part even though I think I’m the least of it. I have a writing style in which I take time to proof-read and revise occasionally when needed. So, it’s easy as pie for me to take out a violent political metaphor and say it another way. Some people let their emotions flow more when writing, and that’s fine, too.

If I use a violent metaphor in speech, I’m going to try to recover. For example, maybe just by saying “what I mean is . . ”

“Even though I think the other side does it worse, I will do my part.”
Good advice!

I think given a polarizing environment, we may have to do away with hyperbolic speech entirely or preface our comments with saying that it's a worst-case scenario or example. Otherwise, people will take it seriously.
