I think the act of lust somehow became confused with being "dirty" and certainly "usually intense or unbridled sexual desire" is in a category of its own...and even animals are not off limit re the extremes...and the results speak for themselves - more harm than good...I agree that a desire is more something than a mere thought. But the word “unbridled” seems to set up a self-fulfilling prophecy. Meaning that Merriam-Webster is kind of giving a max definition of lust.Lust:

I think once lust was separated from love, the confusion occurred in the (collective) humanities. Expressions of love through lust were demonized and the natural human condition was twisted, fostering guilt et al..
