As an American, I think Gorbachev is a good guy, largely because he and Reagan signed the INF Treaty in 1988 (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty).
But I think many Russia citizens thought he . . . gave away too much of the country. That he let too many former Soviet republics — such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan — just walk away. That there might have been a way to negotiate greater autonomy, but still keep them in the fold.

Nothing to do about it now. But people often make decisions trying to undo a last mistake, to a fault. When they ought to be about moving forward in a positive way.
Part of skillful politics is trying to understand the other person’s motivation, and that’s what I’m trying to do.
