“ . . newer migrants may mistakenly believe they too will be granted work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. . ”

And therein lies one of the major dilemmas with immigration policy. If you make one exception for humanitarian reasons, people may believe you’ll also make an exception in their case.

However—

If we’re going to say we’re a major player on the world stage, and of course we are, then we need to shoulder a big part of the load when there’s a crisis, just saying.

And then I’ll say that even Pres. Reagan signed an immigration bill in 1986 which included an amnesty component. And a solid package will probably include a combo of better border control, decent guest worker program, and some amnesty component.

Although today we might have a 4th component—

And that’s a E-Verify program with teeth, and put a few corporate executives in jail when they don’t practice due diligence.

Take a look at this scene in an American city (in New York) - migrants crammed and out on the streets.

Dozens of recently arrived migrants to New York City camp outside of the Roosevelt Hotel, which has been made into a reception center, as they try to secure temporary housing on Aug. 01, 2023 in New York City.

President Biden approved work permits to help eliminate scenes like the above. Your article explains it as this:
Letting them immediately apply for temporary protected status, rather than wait six months after entry or be told they are ineligible, will enable more to support themselves rather than be dependent on the city’s services.

And of course, we need to fix the bigger issue, our immigration system itself. We need to see what is manageable. Our current system is unmanageable.

In the short term, this will take jobs away from American citizens. In the long term, this is “supposed” to grow the overall economy and make more good jobs available for all of us.

However—

Middle-income Americans have declined from 60% of the adult population to 50% today. So, not near the decline people have talked about. We could even say, The decline of the middle-class has been greatly exaggerated!

But we are moving in the wrong direction. And when people talk about “wage polarization” and so on and so forth, they’re right. There are definitely the facts to back this up.

Which I guess is why I have so many threads on economics.

Interestingly, there are reports that President Biden will approve more border wall to be built and start deporting some Venezuelans. He gave a response that he had to do it based on law signed by President Trump, but the real issue may be that Republicans now have a 18% lead over Democrats when it comes to who Americans think can better handle immigration. You know that's the case when even MSNBC is critical of how Biden is handling immigration:

{watch the first 15 minute segment).

This shouldn't even be a political issue. The problem is so bad in some areas that both sides should be able to see that our current practice is not sustainable.

I just learned that a 1996 Clinton-era law [with Republican House] had unintended consequence—

Tougher penalties motivated the migrants from Mexico to just stay in the U.S., rather than moving back and forth in time with Harvest Season.
