‘Who would have guessed that the year his book Star Wars ™ Jesus released would be the very same year the world would celebrate 30 years of the Star Wars ™phenomenon?

‘Author Caleb Grimes certainly wasn’t thinking along those lines, because he told me in a recent phone interview, “I didn’t plan it; I think God planned it.”

‘Yep, just like somehow God led him to Christ the year Star Wars ™ hit the silver screen, and God brought him and his Star Wars-loving wife together in 2001, the same year that Episode II: Attack of the Clones came out, which portrays the romance of Anakin and Padme. Coincidence? Hardly. Check it out in Grimes’ book.’

‘ . . “One of God’s subtle, spy-like elements about Him is He allows truth to be in the world and not come from explicitly Christian sources, so that we as Christians have to go and be in the world and not be separate from it.” . . [from Caleb Grimes] . . ‘

Interesting.

Yes, some but not all Christians specifically like the religious aspects of Stars Wars, I guess starting with the original movie way back in 1977.

2 Cor.6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
John 17:14-16 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

The Bible instructs believers to separate themselves from this world and its systems and beliefs. I believe Mr. Grimes should read his Bible a little more.

I haven't seen a Star Wars movie in a while. Kinda lost track of them with there being so many sequels and maybe even prequels. I do remember Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, the Force, and several other things.

I read through the article and I actually find it interesting. The author is being creative with his evangelism, but one thing that stood out to me is this comment of his:

I asked, are you saying that Star Wars is a Christian film? I recall many a Christian suggesting that very thing during the early years of Lucas’ sci-fi morality plays. And then there were those who adamantly shouted that it was dripping with New Age philosophy, and certainly not Christian.

To the uninformed, Grimes might sound somewhat sacrilegious by espousing the film as being largely steeped in other religions and enjoying the very fact that it’s not a ‘Christian’ film. But if you listen to him a while, you will hear his belief that God’s truth isn’t limited to the Bible alone, but is revealed in the universe at large as well.
I think that is a very bold statement for a Christian to make.

He reiterates that point...
“One of God’s subtle, spy-like elements about Him is He allows truth to be in the world and not come from explicitly Christian sources, so that we as Christians have to go and be in the world and not be separate from it.”

I think a statement like that would cause many Christians to be uncomfortable. Other religions are sometimes seen as being the doctrines of demons.

Not quite. You are living in the world so you can't separate from it fully.

Paul clarifies some of those points, like in 1 Corinthians 5:9-10:
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the greedy and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to leave the world. 11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is a sexually immoral person

I’m in this world but I’m not part of this world. I may have to interact with nonbelievers but I do not have to agree with or participate in their actions. This world is not my home. I’m just passing through.

“From a very young age I felt an almost spiritual connection to Star Wars. It was only years later that I think I worked out why.

“I used to watch the original trilogy most days after school. I would come home and play my copies on VHS video, . . . ”

.

.

“I was always deeply drawn to the story of Luke Skywalker. His is often noted to be an archetypal ‘hero’s journey’.”

.

.

“Luke Skywalker’s story, however, is that the worst possible news about ourselves may indeed be true, and yet redemption is still possible.”

This writer is Dr. Paul Mathole, and he also likes the religious aspects, especially of the first Trilogy produced “back in the day,” episodes 4, 5, & 6.

If the Star Wars – A New Hope (1977) had been an “art house” film it would have ended way earlier, probably soon after the stormtroopers murder Luke’s Aunt & Uncle and he finds the burned husks of their bodies. It probably would have ended with something like,

“Luke decides to go off and study and become a Jedi Knight. The End.”

Star Wars is “genre” in all the best ways, like a western, or a detective story, or like a “swashbuckling” pirate story! :)

The story is as ancient as humanity - villains and hero's... and who borrows from who and who owns what is egocentric - and what does it matter that many christians like the religious aspects of Star Wars movies or not?

Jesus ate with non-believers. He also paid taxes. :)
