I decided to start this topic because I view polarization as being a big turn off to agnostics and even political independents.

Polarization defined:
division into two sharply distinct opposites
especially : a state in which the opinions, beliefs, or interests of a group or society no longer range along a continuum but become concentrated at opposing extremes
Source: Merriam-Webster

We find polarization in debates between atheists and Christians. We also find it in politics between Republicans and Democrats. I've found it even in more mundane things such as in sports. Most recently there were polarizing views regarding the popular WNBA start Caitlin Clark. In these situations, people tend to not compromise, tend to care more about sides than truth. In more extreme cases, it can lead to political gridlock, radicalization/extremism, and even a civil war/violence.

For Discussion:
1. What is your view on polarization? What causes it?
2. Can polarization be fixed?
3. Is it avoidable? Are there times when it is right to be polarized? What do you do in that case? Go to war?

2. Can polarization be fixed?

Keep in mind that a challenge is that it takes 2 or more people to be involved, but we can still discuss what each individual should do to prevent it.

Here's my list:
1. Self-discipline (probably the hardest thing to do). Listening to a very partisan and polarizing politician can either make you hate him or her or their side or that politician will get you to hate the other side. The self-discipline comes into play by not reacting negatively or in the same partisan way but instead take the higher ground by reacting in a non-partisan constructive way. I find this to be the best way to not only get to the truth of a matter but to also not push people away, including opponents. I show them that I remain open for dialogue, I don't hate their side, etc.

Believe me, I have to put this into practice when I listen to some of the more extreme news analysts on Fox News and CNN. And of course, I have to put that into practice when engaging with members on this forum who have a wide ranging political/religious views. I'm up to the task!

2. Become an agnostic. The easiest thing to do! (joking of course)..;):)

Remember the similarities. Another way to fix it is to remember what we have in common. Yes, we should acknowledge our differences but also keep in mind that we have similarities and we should build on those.
