Let's discuss the extreme views of both parties (I'm only referring to the U.S. political parties), and then we can discuss how best to avoid them, assuming you believe they should be avoided. We can start a list of extreme views from both major political parties.

Extreme Republican views:
1. Total ban on abortion
2. Do away with gay marriage
3. Allow Creationism to be taught in science classes
4. Merit-based immigration
5. No restrictions on the Second Amendment

Extreme Democrat views:
1. Banning all guns
2. Allow late term abortions
3. Defund the police
4. Decriminalize border crossings (or even open borders?)

For Debate
What other extreme views have you heard from each side?
How can we take away or reduce the chances of such views becoming public policy?

I believe if there was one-party control in all branches of the federal government and it was looking like their dominance could last multiple terms, then we'd see the extremes of that party coming out on fully display. What keeps any one party in check is a divided federal government and/or the prospects of losing control of any one branch because of the public seeing the party becoming too extreme.
