One argument for God's existence or at least to show that we need such being is the need for role models. Role models not only provide very good examples for us, but they also give us something to strive for, and to keep our standards high. But in non-theistic systems, there can be a bunch of rules, but I question what good are they if no one follows them in a good way. I thought of this because so many people that we'd expect to look up to as role models, and I mean successful, rich, and famous people, just end up being sexual deviants or can hardly keep a relationship. They are just all over the place nowadays. I think God fills in the gap for a need for a role model.
This is just a rough sketch of an argument I came up with, and I see it being connected to the arguments for objective morality.
Some weaknesses:
- Potential weaknesses supporting the claim of a need role models
- May not prove God exists or is needed if there are non-theists role models
- I could be overgeneralizing on there not being good role models. Perhaps the mainstream media focuses mostly on the bad examples.
- Religious leaders people also living sexually deviant lives and worse.
Some strengths:
- God would make a good role model since he is perfectly good - without human flaws
- The areas that you'd expect to find good role models is shrinking (the places we used to look to in the famous singers, in our leaders, etc).
For Discussion:
1. Where are the role models? Is there any place where we can expect to find them consistently? In Teachers? (what I'm hearing nowadays is scary, actually).
2. Do you agree with the above argument? What are its weaknesses? What are its strengths?
