President George W. Bush —

May 2006

“ . . we'll increase the number of Border Patrol officers by an additional 6,000. . ”

“ . . to secure our border, we must create a temporary worker program. . ”

“ . . we need to hold employers to account for the workers they hire. . ”

“ . . I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law, to pay their taxes, to learn English, and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship, but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules . . ”

Is this about right?

President Bush —

“ . . it strains State and local budgets and brings crime to our communities. These are real problems.

“Yet we must remember that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are decent people who work hard, support their families, practice their faith, and lead responsible lives. They are a part of American life, but they are beyond the reach and protection of American law. . . ”

Back to back. And these two aspects, the negative and the positive, constitute the tension about illegal immigration.

I think lots of people would say that the major problem with our Southern border is just the large amounts of migrants that come through it, whether it be coming in illegally, or because of our catch and release policy.

I would want these problems addressed first before agreeing to any amnesty deal. Otherwise, we will probably be right back in the same situation in a few years.

I also agree with all of Bush's other plans you listed in your first post, but I would also add we need to add a lot more judges to deal with asylum cases because of the back log of cases that we have today.

President Biden should be graded straight, no curve.

As should President Trump. I remember hearing that immigration increased in late 2019, meaning in the months before Covid. I’m going to try to look that up.
