I can sometimes dive into science, especially medicine. The Carter Center has worked with people in rural areas of Africa to treat guinea worm disease and to prevent the next round of infection.

President Jimmy Carter passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024, and I think this is one possible good show of respect to the man.

If this interests you anyway . . .

If not, maybe each of us continues to do our best in another area.

And life is all about multiple areas! :)

the dogs and . . .

“Since then, Guinea worm infections have been found in domestic dogs and cats in parts of Chad, Mali and Ethiopia, as well as in olive baboons (Papio anubis) in Ethiopia. There have been sporadic reports of Guinea worm in other species in the past, but scientists assumed these were just occasional spillover events from human hosts. New reports indicate, however, that the worm is now much more widespread among animals — and researchers think that this represents a shift in the parasite’s ecology.”

Even with a good mix of scientists and community volunteers, might be difficult to eradicate.

“Globally, Guinea worm has declined from an estimated 3.56 million cases across 20 countries in 1986 to just 14 human cases in 5 countries in 2023”

All the same, what a victory! :)

I remember a show that on Discovery Channel or something like that was about parasites. I think it was called Monsters Inside Me.

I could not bring myself to watch it because I am terrified by the subject. Because of that, I'm careful about the type of water I drink and I will never eat uncooked meats.

But thank God the cases of the Guinea Worm are decreasing! Skin still crawling though 🙁
