Is Swinging really harmful?

It's something I would never do myself, but there are definitely those doing it who you wouldn't expect would be doing it.

The reaction is usually that it goes against marriage and involves cheating, jealousy, etc. But then I can see someone coming along and questioning who gets to decide what marriage is supposed to be like. What if everyone involved are consenting adults? Just because you wouldn't do it, why should all other consenting adults follow your lead? How does it harm you or society?

For those that say that swinging is wrong or harmful, what are your responses to the above questions.

I suppose with me, it depends on how or why it is practiced. I've seen some scenarios where one spouse gets their spouse to engage in it and it's for some perverse reason. Perhaps to humiliate and degrade their partner or there's some insecurity that they are playing out while oddly also being turned on by it. In the long run, I question if such relationship would last.

But I'm open (no pun intended) enough to consider that they are other ways and reasons for engaging in swinging.

Then we maybe ask, what’s just a role-play versus what’s for real.

PS I’d say probably less than 10% of married couples have any reasonable chance of swinging working out and being a positive move for them.

Yeah, I bet a lot of couples are just experimenting or playing with fire in these cases. I mean there's not even a manual on how to handle regular marriages. Well actually there are plenty of books, but there's no perfect guide I should say. So I'm sure there is even less of a guide on how to navigate open marriages or swinging.

And for the record, I support non-monogamous consensual relationships, like polygamy since I still see some commitment in them, and it has some historical precedent. Maybe that will be the next battle for marriage in 10 years or more lol

And doesn’t mean we need to automatically accord plural marriage the same legal standing as marriage between 2 persons.

True... we could just not interfere when it is between consenting adults... the couple can also write up their own legal contracts about who gets what in the case of a split up.
