Chapter 10, verses 33 & 34

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

— King James Version

And when you can pull this off, and more power to you.

But it’s also the case that, No good deed goes unpunished. And people don’t like being “indebted” to you, even if you don’t look at it that way at all!

Meaning, good deeds are at least as difficult as anything else.

30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling . . . ”

.

33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.

34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. . . ”

— New Living Version

A person who is a stranger is sometimes unpredictable. It doesn’t always work to try to take care of them.

But you’re adding skills all along the course of your life. So, I guess sometimes something like this works. It’s certainly not the only way to help.

35 ”The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.

37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

I bet this has been put in movies, in disguised form.

“It reminds me of a pastor friend whose church hosted several ethnic congregations on Sunday mornings. The church was crawling with people on Sunday mornings from all these congregations meeting in various places on their massive campus. He said the head usher came up to him and essentially asked. With all of these people crawling around here on Sundays it’s hard to know who might be coming to our worship. How do we know who to be nice to and roll out the red carpet?”

Uh, I don’t know. All of them?

We give to agencies who make sure people’s stories check out and they aren’t running some scam. It’s how we can sleep at night.

The 1st one is more open-hearted, the 2nd one more street smart. And we probably need both.
