I believe that getting to the truth is one of the highest goals in intellectual matters. From an intellectual standpoint, there are a lot of mental barriers that can restrict, distort, or even cover up the truth. Among some of these mental barriers are beliefs (unproven ideas) and bias. I believe that some agnostic-based ideals, such as intellectual humility and integrity are very good at keeping beliefs and bias in check.
As far as beliefs goes, they are impossible to not have. We form ideas and beliefs even unconsciously, like when we make plans for the future which comes with some implicit belief that there will be a tomorrow for you. But the key is to be willing to keep each belief in proper perspective, like acknowledging the ones that are unproven and keeping them separate from the ones that are proven. Then there's bias which is also unavoidable. However, if you are willing to weed it out when or if it is discovered, then that will put you on track to see things more objectively.
Now imagine you approach your intellectual life free of beliefs and bias. Such a person would be able to follow or find truth wherever it leads.
