“ . . issues for Republicans to grapple with — corporate power, the growing skepticism toward public health authorities post-pandemic, and, of course, simple partisan critiques of a Democratic president. But it wasn’t just partisan critiques. . ”

***********************************

I think questioning corporate power is a good thing.

Yes, I favor market solutions. But sometimes you can’t get it, and the situation is what economists call “externalities.”

And this is where East Palestine, Ohio is.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources [ODNR] estimate more than 43,000 animals have died in and around East Palestine roughly three weeks after the train derailment.

.

.

"We have no reason to believe that those terrestrial animal deaths were as a result of the spill," she said.

===============

“No reason to believe” is such a mealy-mouthed answer. Obviously, the fish, frogs, crayfish, etc, who died would normally be somebody else’s important meal.

Would have been so much better to say— Hey, we’re spending resources to take a good long look, and obviously there are a lot of unknowns.

Feb. 24, 2023:

“ . . An independent research team from Texas A&M and Carnegie Mellon University — which is located in Pittsburgh, about an hour from the crash site — are collecting their own data with a mobile monitoring van that could reflect short-term bursts, though it will likely be a week or two before that analysis is complete. . ”

*******************

This is where even a private organization just doesn’t trust regular people. Go ahead and release the information now without the analysis.

Take that chance for Rock-n-Roll ! ! !

Have that conversation. Have various people available to explain what it might mean or doesn’t mean.

I've been hearing about this story about this story for a while now. In terms of if Republicans will change their view on corporations, I doubt it. I remember the big oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and some blamed the lack of regulations. But even after that, plenty of Republicans have still continued to tout private market solutions (w/ corporate friendly options) over government imposed solutions/regulations.

I would want to see a good debate on that issue. Which is better would be better at reducing externalities? Government solutions? Private market solutions? Both?

I personally kind of think that governments and corporations can be equally lousy. And I hope conservatives kind of come round to this view.

PS Almost like conservatives built up government too much, then like your first love, falling too hard out of love and deciding the former love interest is lousy, crummy, so on, and so forth.

CNN article on timeline, Feb. 22 and earlier:

Feb. 7 — “Residents in the area are told they may smell odors coming from the site because the byproducts of the controlled burn have a low odor threshold – meaning people may smell these contaminants at levels much lower than what is considered hazardous, the EPA says.”

*****************************************

This is really weak.

If you can smell it, I think the burden of proof is on the person trying to argue that it’s still not dangerous.

The man is pissed!

And he has every right to be pissed. Now, maybe the controlled burn really was the best choice in the circumstances. But even so, I think the authorities have done a poor job with the clean-up phase and especially in communicating with the residents and citizens.

PS. I liked hearing the dog barking in the background.
